About Wheatgrass Juice

+ What makes frozen wheatgrass juice so good?

There are many different reasons why frozen wheatgrass juice makes a lot of sense. We specifically believe that it needs to be grown outdoors and here are a few benefits of great outdoor grown wheatgrass juice which has been flash frozen:
  • Quality

Wheatgrass juice from outdoor grown plants develops a 6x deeper root system, grows in a slow natural timeline which is 10x longer, chlorophyll levels are 50% higher and simple sugars are non-existent.
  • Health Impact

Winter wheat is a natural, winter surviving plant due to ice structuring proteins in the plant. As a result, flash freezing it does no harm to the juice. Your very best verification method is to use any of the objective measures available to see how you are doing. This includes things like glucometers, blood pressure machines, tests from your doctor, etc. Even more exciting, do live blood cell analysis. When you do before and after live blood cell analysis, you will see massive internal changes like the unclumping of red blood cells. This is a great validation for anyone who does not have other objective measures that they can use.
  • Taste and Tolerability

Wheatgrass juice grown outdoors in the right region has no detectable molds. This makes the juice taste 1000% better and the juice produces none of the side-effects incorrectly characterized as "detoxification".
  • Convenience without Compromise

There are 3 main groups that find their way to wheatgrass juice. Performance athletes, the middle aged with a child or two (like me) and those with a serious health crisis. In all cases, time can be very hard to find. Generally, none of these three types of households are in a position to take on the additional stress of growing their own wheatgrass.
  • Immediate Availability

You can start with flash frozen juice like ours tomorrow morning as we UPS it overnight to your door. This can give you a considerable jumpstart. Very few people start growing and producing good wheatgrass right away. Even if you were to do this, you can't start using the juice for 10 days (the growing cycle of the tray growing wheatgrass).
  • Smaller Start-up Cost

Those wanting large amounts of wheatgrass juice require an expensive wheatgrass specific juicer in the $250 range. With juice like ours, you simply do not need this. For someone drinking a modest amount (say 1 fl. oz. per day), they can certainly get a less expensive manually operated juicer.
  • Reduced Continuing Use Cost

Flash frozen juice like ours costs less money, less time and less effort than sourcing the grass from other sources (like a local wheatgrass tray provider) and juicing it yourself. Naturally, if you are able to grow your own, you can save money but it does come at a time and energy cost.
  • Frozen Is Best For Northern Locations

Reduced sunlight in the winter months makes indoor growing difficult without supplimental lights. Wheatgrass just isn't the same without natural UV.
  • Frozen Is Best Solution For High Volume Drinkers And Families

Growing to add a small amount to your diet here and there is one thing. Anyone using larger amounts or a small amount for several family members will find growing to make several ounces available per day a much bigger task than expected.
So take advantage of the frozen medium. Whether you buy juice from us or grow your own, everyone can utilize freezing to help manage their juice. If you are growing indoors, you will have likely have somewhat reduced quality, taste and tolerability but perhaps beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this might be the best approach for you.

+ What does it taste like?

Our juice has a well deserved reputation of being the best tasting wheatgrass juice you can get.  The taste of the juice can be best described as:
  • Neutral and unfamiliar but not unpleasant
  • Mildly sweet with some similarities to green tea
  • Has a mild aroma similar to a freshly mown lawn
If you have read that wheatgrass juice tastes terrible, you should know that this happens when people grow the grass indoors where mold contaminates the juice.  This juice does taste terrible.  Our wheatgrass is grown outdoors, is exceptional clean and you will find it enjoyable to drink.

+ The best way to use it

There are a few simple principles to getting the most from your wheatgrass juice.
  • Spread the use through the day (only if you are using more than 2 fl. ozs.)
  • Drink the juice on an empty stomach (15 minutes before you eat)
  • Use water as the mix
  • Keep the temperature below 108F (this is where enzymes begin to be damaged)
  • Allow for sublingual absorption (blood vessels under the tongue) by holding the juice in your mouth and feeling the taste change or consider sucking on some of the cubes

+ Is it important to drink it immediately?

Yes, you should drink the juice within a few minutes or you risk losing vital elements.

This is done to prevent oxidation and applies equally to both the fresh squeezed and flash frozen juice. Our method of vacuum packaging and flash freezing ensures that the juice gets to you in a perfect state. Rapid consumption on your part (drinking it as it thaws) keeps oxidation from taking place and will maximize the benefits.

The practice of drinking your wheatgrass within 20 minutes of juicing and on an empty stomach was popularized by Ann Wigmore at the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston during the 1970's for a simple reason...people using this ingestion technique were observed to do well.

+ Fresh vs frozen: is flash frozen juice potent?

The first thing that you need to know is that freezing does not damage the nutrition, enzymes, etc. in food. You can read up a little on freezing here:

What freezing does is dramatically slow down molecular activity, it doesn't stop or kill it. This is true for the good things like nutrition and also the bad things like bacteria. The lower the freezer temperature, the slower the molecular activity and better quality of the food. Our juice is kept at a frigid -15F and the quality of the juice is just fantastic.

In terms of wheatgrass juice, it is a significantly better frozen product than it is fresh. This goes against conventional thinking so please read through this entire section and you will be very surprised by what you learn.

The first thing that you need to realize is that the question itself is flawed. The actual question should be "Is indoor grown wheatgrass juiced fresh better than outdoor grown wheatgrass juice that is flash frozen". The key here is actually "indoor grown vs outdoor grown" and the outdoor grown wheatgrass juice is vastly superior.

The advantages of outdoor grown wheatgrass:
  • Root system grows 6x deeper
  • Growth cycle is 10x longer
  • Chlorophyll levels are 50% higher
  • Simple sugars are eliminated
  • There are no detectable molds
  • The juice tastes dramatically better
The problem with indoor grown wheatgrass:
  • Everyone knows that plants have some instincts such as turning toward the sun
  • Not many people know that plants also have a survival instinct
  • When conditions dangerous to the plant are sensed, the plant changes its life cycle. Specifically, the plant will speed its growth processes in order to go to flower and drop its seed. The intention is survival and the hope for better conditions for the next generation.
  • Indoor grown wheatgrass lives in shallow plastic trays and the environment is hostile to the plant (considering the terrible matting of the root system)
  • As a result, the plants survival instinct is triggered and it seeks to flower which dramatically speeds up the growth of the plant
  • Indoor grown wheatgrass grows to harvesting height of 7" - 11" in just 10 days
  • Outdoor grown wheatgrass grows to the same harvesting height in 60 - 120 days
  • The short life cycle leaves the plant in an immature state, far short of its potential and full of simple sugars
The mold issue with indoor grown wheatgrass:
  • While tray growing may be hostile towards wheatgrass, it is very supportive of molds
  • Molds release peculiar little poisons called mycotoxins of which there are over 400 different types
  • Mycotoxins are unusual because they don't affect everyone in the same way every time. In addition tolerance to them decreases over time.
  • The molds can make the juice taste terrible and mycotoxins can cause side effects like nausea, dizziness and headaches.
  • The typical experiences of a drinker of moldy wheatgrass juice
  • People normally start with very low expectations regarding the taste
  • The first time they drink it slowly and think that wasn't so bad
  • After doing this for a while, they start to shoot the shot
  • At some point, they move to holding their nose and shooting the shot
  • Later on (sometimes days later, sometimes months later) the put a glass to their lips and just can't drink it
  • They normally never have wheatgrass juice again
  • Wheatgrass juice properly grown tastes nice, so please don't let this happen to you
  • If you have had a bad wheatgrass juice experience, you just have try our juice. It will amaze you.
The power of flash freezing foods:
  • First, read up a little on freezing from the U.S. Department Of Agriculture here
  • Flash frozen fruits and vegetables do not lose their potency because flash freezing is dramatically different than slow freezing
  • When you slow freeze something in your freezer at home, large ice crystals form and the food gets torn up from the inside out causing them to thaw with significantly different characteristics than when they entered the freezer.
  • Flash frozen foods are frozen with an overwhelming amount of cold which causes rapid freezing and prevents the formation of large ice crystals.
  • As a result, the food maintains its taste, texture, colour and nutrition.
  • In reality, most frozen foods are actually better than fresh because they are harvested at their peak and flash frozen rather than being picked green and ripening inside their shipping containers
Why wheatgrass juice works so well when flash frozen?

Our wheatgrass comes from winter wheat which actually lives through the winter. It can survive the winter and spring back to life (in the spring) due to special ice structuring proteins which keep the juice raw and living while frozen. While I'd never have frozen barley juice (which does not survive the winter), wheatgrass is a fantastic flash frozen product. These proteins are unique to winter wheat and have been used for other purposes as well. For instance, this article talks about how these proteins are used to smooth the texture of ice cream:

By the way, one of nature's other ice structuring protein miracles can be seen in the common wood frog. These frogs freeze solid every winter and then in the spring, come back to life, mate and the cycle continues. Read more here:

+ How much should I use?

There is no limit to how much juice you can use, just guidelines that have been established over time. Trust your instincts and observations as you may find that you prefer more or less. Feel free to experiment.

Each juice cube is 0.5 fl. oz. For supplemental nutrition use:
  • 1 - 2 fl. ozs. / day under 40 years of age (2 - 4 cubes)
  • 2 - 4 fl. ozs. / day over 40 years of age (4 - 8 cubes)
For those trying to affect a major change:
  • Start with 10 fl. ozs. per day for 60 days (20 cubes)
  • Use it throughout the day, the suggestion is 2.5 fl. oz. (5 cubes), 4 x per day
  • Traditionally, it is taken on an empty stomach, at least 15 minutes before a meal
  • Be a careful observer and economize appropriately over time.
  • On rare occassions, more juice may be needed. For the most part, we believe that 10 fl. ozs. is the point of diminishing return (you stop getting value for your money). We believe additional funds beyond this are better spent on balance. This means things like great organic produce, a juicer or a day at the spa.
How much do we use:
  • We have many family members that use the juice
  • The adults drink 5 fl. oz. per day
  • The children are presented with 1 fl. oz. per day and the infants with 0.5 fl. oz. per day. We encourage but do not force consumption and the children drink about 50% of the juice presented to them.

+ Can it be mixed with fruit juice or blended into smoothies?

If possible, simply mix the juice with room temperature water. This approach has historically produced exceptional results.

In the juice bars, you may see people chase a shot of wheatgrass juice with orange juice. This is done to mask the taste because the indoor grown wheatgrass juice tends to have high mold content which makes the juice taste terrible. Our wheatgrass juice tastes excellent and you don't need to disguise the taste.

The second reason we suggest water is that fruit juices contain high amounts of simple sugars. Negating the effects of various forms of sugar is one of the benefits of the juice. Proceed if you wish, particularly if it helps your children drink the juice.

We have always found that the blender tends to mix a lot of air into the juice. As a result, we avoid this when possible. On the other hand, your family may find blending the juice into a smoothie is so fast, easy and delicious that it seems appropriate.

So, proceed in a way that ensures that you and your family can enjoy the juice and if possible, stick to simply the juice and water.

+ Are wheatgrass powders / tablets just as good?

The simple answer is no. Powders and tablets produce only a fraction of the benefits of the juice and should be avoided. That said, here is the comprehensive answer...

There is currently an extraordinary number of wheatgrass and barley grass products that are available to the consumer. If you want to get a sense of how many, get the book Wheatgrass -Nature's Finest Medicine by Steve Meyerowitz for extensive details.

We believe that the format you choose is really important. In particular, we think it needs to be alive. I'd like to discuss the formats a little further in order of preference:

Frozen Wheatgrass Juice
Best Approach

Here are the decision making criteria that we believe are important:
  • Look for outdoor grown wheatgrass because it is clean, which means no detectable molds, better taste and no adverse reactions
  • Always seek juice first because it is a living product
  • Avoid anything processed to have a shelf life
  • Make sure it is packaged in a way that it is distanced from it's natural enemies which are air, heat and light and this keeps it in great shape
As we grow using organic methods, we experience a high degree of variability in the crop. This means that when we harvest the juice, we continually sample for taste and intensity (spectrophotometer). In the course of doing this, it is not uncommon for several people to drink 20 fl. oz. or more of the juice during a harvesting day. This is fresh juice coming directly from our fields, drank on the spot and here's the critical point...with this fresh juice right from the field, no one has ever experienced the negative "detoxifying" effects associated with what people sometimes refer to as fresh wheatgrass (greenhouse grown wheatgrass coming from trays). These detoxifying effects are a myth and the reactions are caused by moldy grass. Our wheatgrass does not cause these effects because growing the wheatgrass outdoors results in grass and juice with no detectable molds.

The process that we use to maintain the quality of the juice is called flash freezing. In flash freezing, intense cold is applied to the juice in order to freeze it rapidly. This causes only small ice crystals to form. Small ice crystals do not rupture cell membranes and this keeps the color, taste, texture and nutrition intact. This process allows us to capture a clean, living, natural product and distance it from its natural enemies (air - heat - light). Our flash frozen wheatgrass juice is made to the best of our ability and without compromise.

successful health experiences attributed directly to our juice, long slow growing cycle, raw & living, good taste, no mold issues, usable in large amount over long periods of time, no management or cleanup or waste

must be kept frozen so it doesn't work well for business travellers

Fresh Juice
Second Best Approach

In a perfect world, fresh juice available all the time would seem to be the preferred choice. People have frequently talked about the important of freshness in the juice. We agree with this belief (that is why we flash freeze instead of slow freeze the juice) as the juice oxidizes quickly.

As you research wheatgrass juice on the Internet, you are going to read about many problems people have experienced with fresh juice. These problems include:
  • terrible taste
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • nausea
The problems are not a product of wheatgrass juice. These are a product of growing environments which promotes mold growth in the grass. The mold comes from ungerminated seeds in the soil rotting and which allows fungi to flourish. These fungi release something called mycotoxins which are believed responsible for these effects. The entire process is sped up by hot environments.

The reaction people have are often referred to as the "detoxifying" effects of wheatgrass juice. This is a myth. These problems occur with tray grown and greenhouse grown wheatgrass loaded with mold. In fact, even many outdoor environments are problematic in the summer. These problems simply disappear when you grow outdoors in a region hospitable to wheat.

health successes reported, raw & living, freshest format, widely available at juicebars everywhere, inexpensive (but very time consuming) if you grow your own

mold issues, bad taste, negative side effects, short growing cycle, not usable in large amounts over long periods of time, high levels of management and cleanup required, extensive waste

Freeze Dried Juice Powders
Third Best Approach

The objectives here are terrific and two-fold:
  1. Preserve the product without heat to try and retain its nutrition
  2. Make it considerably smaller to ease it's handling and transport on every level.
The basic process involves juicing -> freezing -> freeze drying -> packaging with inert gas. It is however, a little more complicated in practicality. There are a lot of variables to control and you can read more about this at Wikipedia. The link is

There are a few areas that generate questions:
  1. Slow freezing is normally used because this creates large ice crystals. This is normally used because large ice crystals are easier to freeze dry. When slow frozen, the juice maintains contact with its primary enemy, air. In addition, the large ice crystals that form rupture cell membranes and compromise color - taste - texture and nutrition.
  2. It is expensive and customers do not have the education to understand why when there are 2 products in a bottle that one costs 2x or 3x more. This makes is a slow moving product and even worse, there are so many steps involved and so much energy used that the actual cost is far higher than 3x more. This makes it very hard financially on the providers. I just looked at a competitors site which produces 15 different bottle of powder and only 2 of them are freeze dried. Plus, because the yield is so low, this particular one has been boosted by adding 20% filler.
  3. Once the bottle has been opened, the level of preservation created by using an inert gas is gone and the crystals are back to being in the presence of oxygen.
supposed to be bio-active, made from juice so it should be far better than powder, small and easy to transport, reasonably priced for the amount of investment required

easily confused with powder (see below), efficacy unknown, many processing steps, entire contents compromised after opening

Fourth Approach (Not Recommended)

Powders made from chopped grass have very different properties than juice.

While powders make terrific economic sense for the producers, we do not believe they offer you much. The reason being that it takes a massive amount of wheat grass to make just a small amount of juice. However, it takes just a small amount of chopped grass to make a large amount of powder.

Sometimes these products are referred to whole leaf which would lead you to believe that it may be more complete. The problem with wheat grass itself is that the human body cannot digest grass itself so it needs a hand. The juicing process, which is done by masticating juicers simulates the process of chewing on a level far beyond what we are capable of. This process separates the juice from the indigestible fibres so that it is available to you.

Powders also need to be dried to remove enough moisture to make them last in a packet or bottle that can sit on the shelf. The exposure to air and heat often associated with this process damages the nutrition in it. So as a product, these are ones to be avoided because the nutrition is compromised and what remains is very difficult to digest and assimilate.

inexpensive, widely available, simple to use and transport

processed and dead, indigestible, health improvement association difficult or impossible to make, sources usually unknown, filler content unknown, often mixed with fillers for taste

Commercial Green Drinks
Fifth Approach (Not Recommended)

In our grocery stores in Canada, you can find several different "greens" drinks.

These will normally show contents on the label like wheatgrass, spirulina, kelp and many others. It sounds fantastic, but when taste these drinks, you will immediately recognize that they are really pineapple or white grape juice drinks with a splash of green powder for color. They are also pasteurized.

If you like the taste and don't mind the sugars, by all means go ahead. Just don't expect to get your nutrition this way!

+ How long can I store it in my freezer?

We have been advised by the American Frozen Food Council that our juice will remain in near perfect shape for up to 3 years. While this may be safe, we think this excessive and instead recommend up to 1 year.

+ Can I let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight?

No! Please do not leave it in the refrigerator overnight to thaw.

People talk about the importance of having wheatgrass juice fresh and our juice supports this principle. The reason it gets attention is that thawing your wheatgrass juice starts oxidation, similar to peeling a banana. If you peeled a banana and left it out, in a short period of time it would brown, the texture would change for the worse and the taste would become unpleasant.

Similar, changes -- oxidation -- occur rapidly in wheatgrass juice left to sit and it is believed that this will cause the loss of vitamins and enzymes present in the juice. For this very reason, our juicing process is extremely streamlined and the juice expressed from the wheat grass is immediately packaged and flash frozen. This does an incredible job of capturing the fresh state of the juice.

By putting room temperature water on the juice, you assist it in returning to a liquid state quite rapidly. The benefit is that this prevents it from sitting and "browning". The combination of a quick freeze and short thaw means that you are in fact drinking a fresh drink. Just make sure to keep the water temperature warm but below 108F and you will not damage any of the nutrients. If the cubes are taking too long to thaw, just add a little more water.

The customer experiences shared all come from people using our wheatgrass juice, adding water to speed the melt and then consuming it on an empty stomach. Other methods of use may be effective, we just don't know for certain. For the time being, we continue to mimic what has worked for people.

+ I am sensitive to cold drinks, how should I prepare it?

If you are sensitive to cold drinks, you need to prepare your juice a little differently.
  • Add a few cubes to a jar that has a top
  • Add enough water to cover the cubes
  • Put the jar into a pitcher
  • Fill the picture with warm water
  • Let it sit for a few minutes
  • Remove the jar and drink the juice

+ It is difficult to afford, any suggestions?

Important! If you can't afford our juice, please note the following:
  • do not allow this to stop you from getting access to wheatgrass juice
  • do not let this push you into wheatgrass tablets or powders as they only have a fraction of the benefits

You need to know that:

  • wheatgrass juice does things for people that we don't know how to replicate in any other way
  • there are many ways to improve your overall health such as through better dietary choices, raw foods, exercise, hydration, ample sleep and the removal of bad habits / environmental problems but adding wheatgrass juice to any of these regimens makes them significantly more effective

Will the price ever come down / are discounts available to first time customers:

  • No, our prices have been carefully worked out, every price is significantly less expensive than your local juice bar and the boxes represent excellent value (please note they all include delivery)
  • Wheatgrass juice has about 10 times the cost of production in it than a $2 cup of coffee has because:
    • the juice yields from wheatgrass are incredibly low compared to any other juice product
    • it is capital intensive due to land, buildings, machinery and people
    • it is currently a small market (although we are changing that a little bit every single day)

So how can I get wheatgrass juice:

  • Substitution
    • there may be no cost at all with a little substitution
    • replace a $2 cup of coffee or a snack at the gas station with wheatgrass juice and the cost problem is solved AND your body will thank you for it
  • Get our juice less expensively with a little planning or effort
    • come to the farm
      • we sell the juice directly at the farm and the shipping savings are passed directly to you
    • try to bundle orders together
      • in many cases, several family members or groups of friends use our juice
      • the price per oz goes down as the box size goes up, again this is shipping savings that we pass directly to you
    • buy a larger box for yourself
      • the price per oz is shown on the order form and it goes down substantially from box to box
      • buying a larger box will save you money, just keep in mind that the 400 and 600 fluid oz boxes require more freezer space than just your refrigerator freezer
  • Grow it yourself
    • The Wheatgrass Book by Ann Wigmore is a quick read in which she not only passes on her enthusiasm for wheatgrass juice, she describes the methods she used to grow it in her apartment in Boston.  Check the book out from the library and proceed.  Yes, it takes time and energy but it will produce returns well in excess of your efforts.

Our suggestion:

  • Even growing it yourself is capital intensive for your first oz of wheatgrass juice (a good juicer is about $300 + growing kit about $60)
  • Get a box of our juice (first 100 fl oz is $189) and get an experience with great juice
  • If you like what it delivers, choose whether or not to continue with our juice or proceed to make the investment to grow your own

In Conclusion:

  • The juice is really worth your effort.  Whatever way you find works for you is the right way.  Just make sure you get some!

+ Should I take vitamin and mineral supplements

No, you are probably better off to discontinue the use of supplements. Here is why:

They Are Totally Incomplete
  • Science has identified 3,800 phytonutrients with thousands more known to exist
  • Supplements contain 25+ vitamins and minerals but are literally missing thousands of nutrients
  • Foods do contain the thousands of identified and unidentified nutrients
  • Therefore, getting your nutrition from food sources is very important.
They Are Not Effective
  • Nutritional literature has many examples of helpful substances being effective as food sources and completely ineffective when taken in a pure form.
  • Look to the Ohio State University study of lycopene as a good example. In testing, the consumption of tomatos (a good source of lycopene) produced terrific results while lycopene extract was totally ineffective.
  • In the U.S. Physicians' Health Study I, researchers tracked over 22,000 doctors with half taking beta-carotene and half taking placebo. After 13 years, the study showed no results (positive or negative) from this use. Read more here
They Can Be Detrimental
  • Nutrients bind to specialized receptors in the body
  • Supplements contain many synthetics that are extraordinarily similar, but not quite identical to nature source nutrients
  • These synthetic forms can fill the receptors and as a result, prevent food source nutrients from binding with them. The problem is that natural source nutrients produce a benefit while many of the synthetics do not.
  • In the U.S. Physicians' Health Study II, researchers tracked 14,642 doctors, aged 50 and older. Each was given one of 16 different combinations of placebo, vitamin C (500 mg synthetic ascorbic acid), vitamin E (400 IU of synthetic alpha-tocopherol), beta-carotene (50mg Lurotin) and multi-vitamin (Centrum Silver). After 12 years, users of the supplements showed statistically significant increased mortality rates and no protective qualities from the use of these supplements. Read more here

+ Common benefits

With high quality wheatgrass juice, your body may produce spectacular results such as:
  • A physical and mental sense of well-being
  • More energy and better sleep
  • Stronger immune system
  • Detoxification on a cellular level
  • Reduced inflammation in the entire body
  • Strong bones and smooth joint function
  • It produces results you can see in live blood cell analysis such as the unclumping of oxygen-carrying red blood cells
  • and much more...

+ Other helpful activities

In our experience, we prefer seeing someone try to remove some bad habits at the same time they add wheatgrass. We believe that any one of a number of positive changes may be the one that tips the scales in your favor, enabling your body to retain, improve or re-establish control of your health. So do yourself a favor and focus on a few common sense ideas.

1) Look at your work environment

For our blue collar breathren, make sure there are no toxins in your work environment. We have talked to a number of people that have become very sick while working in environments with chemical pollutants. Interestingly, several people have indicated that it just never crossed their mind that the auto body shop or print shop they worked in might inadvertently be contributing to their problem. I read something that really resonated with me; it was "if it is not going through a filter, you are the filter". Don't let your body be the filter! If there are chemicals in the air or ones that come in contact with your skin, you may be absorbing them.

For our white collar friends, watch out for those long hours and mental fatigue. It is good to understand that stress has physiological effects. Take a look at this page to read about Dr. Nicholas Perricone's opinion:

2) Clean up your home environment

Chemicals come into the home in air freshening products, cleaning products, on our food as pesticides and herbicides and in the water that we drink. Essentially, if you are not filtering these elements in some way, your body is the filter. Get rid of what you can and filter the rest.

There are many air filters (HEPA) and water solutions out there (reverse osmosis) and these are good to have.

In terms of cleaning chemicals and pollutants on foods, a customer of ours turned us on to a product that we think everyone home should have. It is called the Lotus Santizing System and it serves two purposes. First, it is a fruit and vegetable wash bowl that has been shown (in their testing) to remove up to 70% of herbicides and pesticides. Second, it comes with a spray bottle that is used for most household cleaning applications (except laundry and dishwasher). The machine is literally filled with tap water, a process runs and an extra oxygen molecule is added to the water (ozonating it). The water remains highly charged for about 15 minutes and can be used for virtually any purpose. After about 1 hour, the ozonated water has returned to just regular tap water. This is a very safe product with no residuals and is actually a miniature version of the process used to purify municipal tap water.

3) Do your best to follow your doctor's orders

If you approach your physician for any health matter, the first thing that they will tell you is quit smoking, lose weight and get more exercise. There are also two other important ideas that deserve some attention:

  1. Get high quality sleep - People who sleep less than 6 hours per night have twice the mortality rate in all categories vs. those who sleep more than 6 hours. The body does a lot of repair work in the night, give it a chance to take care of you.
  2. Drink enough water to stay hydrated - every bio-chemical activity in the body needs water. This is our most basic form of fuel so do away with the caffeine filled drinks and get some water.

4) Get some wheatgrass juice

Wheatgrass juice is essentially the king of raw foods and a great source of nutrition for your body. Not only does it have a broad spectrum of nutrition, the juicing process chews the grass (essentially performing the first digestive step) and this makes is exceptionally easy to assimilate. Wheatgrass juice also complements the next point by helping your body achieve pH balance.

Beyond this, there is something unique about wheatgrass juice. It underwent extensive study during the 1930s - 1950s and has been termed the "grass juice factor". The grass juice factor is believed to help the body release a healing growth hormone similar to that released into the body when we sleep.

5) Eat in a way that creates supportive body chemistry

Wheatgrass juice is an excellent support of proper body chemistry, but you are not going to live on wheatgrass alone. So what do you do? Here is the best can assist yourself greatly by just making some different choices at the grocery store.

One of the most sensible movements out there has to do with achieving pH balance in your body. People have always told us what to eat (an apple a day keeps the doctor away) and what not to eat (don't eat too much red meat); however, no one every told us why.

Here is where things get interesting. Those foods we were all told to use in moderation have been shown to make us acidic. This is called acidosis and the best example of it is to think about 3 friends. Friend 1 - never gets a cold, friend 2 - gets a cold and shakes it in a couple of days, friend 3 - gets a cold and has it for weeks. Surprise, if you looked at the pH of their blood, you would discover that friend 1 (never sick) is pH balanced, friend 2 (sometimes sick) is slightly acidic and friend 3 (always sick) is very acidic. The current approach is to eat less acidic foods and more alkaline foods. You can read more about this here:

6) If you need guidance or help getting started...get it at a Health Retreat!

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jump starting a great strategy is much easier if you can put down the books, web sites and advice from friends and just get to it. There are several health retreats which can help you hit the ground running and they are all founded on the principles established by Ann Wigmore.

7) Have faith in your strategy

Most people who find wheatgrass juice do so after a great deal of research. They also have an action plan of sorts know exactly what they are doing. In my opinion, the people that we have seen do really well with wheatgrass juice have done one or more of the things about plus, they believe in their decisions, sometimes God, sometimes both and can move forward with confidence.

8) If a serious health matter shows improvement, still give yourself time to strengthen

On a number of occasions, we have seen people reach their health goals very quickly and then immediately resume the rigors and stresses of work and family life. We believe that true recovery from serious health problems takes time. We encourage you to give your body a chance to completely heal before adding additional stressors.

9) Stick with what worked!

Try not to think of the things you have done (or are about to do) as treatment. Think about them as a life strategy. If you resume your previous lifestyle, expect the same results. If you have found a strategy that works for you, stick with it. One of the new buzzwords is "healthspan". If you have found a strategy that extends your healthspan, stick with it!

+ ORAC rating of wheatgrass juice

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is a method of measuring antioxidant capacities of different foods and you can learn more about it here:

In terms of wheatgrass juice, there is a study that was done that you can reference here:

It is a wet weight reading and shows:
ORAC range of 3,990 - 4,820 per 100 grams

Correlation between the high antioxidant capacity of fruits and vegetables, and the positive impact of diets high in fruits and vegetables, is believed to play an important role in the free-radical theory of aging.  It was developed by the scientists at the National Institute on Aging in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, but this method is not approved by the National Institute of Heath.  The US Department of Agriculture lists a database of the ORAC value of  common foods (no wheatgrass) here:

ORAC is one of those confusing numbers as a number of health food companies spin the numbers.  When comparing ORAC data, some evaluations will compare ORAC units per grams dry weight, others will evaluate ORAC units wet weight and still others will look at ORAC units/serving. Under each evaluation, different foods can appear to have higher ORAC values and most of these values have never been published in scientific literature.  To make it just a little more confusing, it is not known whether such values are accurate or how absorbable and functional these concentrated antioxidants are in the human body.

If the data was being spun for marketing purposes, it could be represented as dry weight which would show:
99,750 - 120,500 per 100 grams

For proper comparison purposes, you should use the range of 3,990 - 4820 per 100 grams.  Note that 100 grams represents about 3.4 fl. oz. of wheatgrass juice.

+ Alkalizing vs acidifying foods

All organic matter including soil, plants and animals can be represented by a pH level. pH stands for potential of Hydrogen and it is the ratio measurement for acid to alkaline. Maintaining a balanced pH level in the body is critical for longterm good health.

The problem with the typical North American diet is that our bodies can become overly acidic. Why is this important? Acidosis creates many health problems and a pH balanced body resolves them. The rationale dates back to work done by Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg who in 1931 was awarded the Nobel prize in Physiology / Medicine.   Dr. Warburg looked at a complex relationship between acidic body chemistry, toxicity (caused by fermenting sugars), low oxygen states and corresponding sub-optimal performance of the body.

Wheatgrass juice is a powerful alkalizing agent which can help body gain and maintain a balanced pH. Your local health food store usually has pH test kits available. Note that the the perfect pH level for human blood ranges betwen 7.2 and 7.35. Your testing kit should have instructions which discuss the various ranges of all bodily fluids.

The Reasons Why:

Each of us is at war and we don't even know it! The private war we each wage is a daily assault on our body by bacteria, virus, fungus, yeasts, and molds. We have entered what might be referred to as critical mass when it comes to this bacterial warfare onslaught being waged against us by stronger and stronger killer bugs and bad bacteria. Our immune systems are becoming weaker and over-taxed in this war. Even the medical profession's first line of defense (the antibiotic) is becoming less and less effective against resistant new strains being created daily as the bacteria mutate. Since Louis Pasteur discovered the germ theory of disease that states germs are the cause of disease, time has proven him correct. But note Dr. Pasteur's dying words: "The germ is nothing, the inner terrain is everything."

The inner terrain referred to in Dr. Pasteur's statement is now being called our biological terrain and comprises our body's digestive tract, lymph system, blood, urinary tract, interstitial and interstitial fluids. Our bodies are alkaline by design and acid by function. Maintaining proper alkalinity is essential for life, health, and vitality. Simply put - an imbalance of alkalinity creates a condition favorable to the growth of bacteria, yeast and other unwanted organisms. All leading biochemists and medical physiologists have recognized pH (or the acid-alkaline balance) as the most important aspect of a balanced and healthy body. They have long known that the maintenance of an alkaline pH in our tissues and cells is critical to cellular health. In contrast, our digestive tract (except for our normally alkaline mouth) has varying degrees of acid by design, and our urinary tract should be slightly acidic for healthy function.

We live and die at the cellular level. All the cells (billions of them) that make up the human body are slightly alkaline, and must maintain alkalinity in order to function and remain healthy and alive. However their cellular activity creates acid and this acid is what gives the cell energy and function. As each alkaline cell performs its task of respiration, it secretes metabolic wastes, and these end products of cellular metabolism are acid in nature. Although these wastes are used for energy and function, they must not be allowed to build up. One example of this is the often painful lactic acid which is created through exercise. The body will go to great lengths to neutralize and detoxify these acids before they act as poisons in and around the cell, ultimately changing the environment of the cell. Most people and clinical practitioners believe the immune system is the body's first line of defense, but in actuality it is not. It is very important, but more like a very sophisticated clean-up service. We must instead look at the importance of pH balance as the first and major line of defense against sickness and disease and for health and vitality.

If we were to ask "What is killing us?", the answer might be "ACIDOSIS"! It has been demonstrated that an acidic, anaerobic (lacking oxygen) body environment encourages the breeding of fungus, mold, bacteria, and viruses. Let's look at an example. If we were to seal the door to our freezer and then unplug it, come back and open the door in two weeks, what would we find? Mold, bacteria, microscopic bugs. Things will be growing and multiplying. Where did they all come from? They did not sneak in - remember the door was sealed. The answer is . . . "they were always there". It is simply that the environment changed to a more inviting and healthy one for the "critters" to live in. This can be likened to a shift in our biological terrain from a healthy oxygenated, alkaline environment to an unhealthy anaeorbic acidic environment. You see what is healthy for us is unhealthy for the body attackers and what is healthy for them is what is unhealthy for our body.

A state of acidosis is simply the lack of oxygen and available calcium which the body uses to maintain its alkaline balance. Calcium makes up 1.6% of our body weight. It is literally the human glue that holds the body together. Calcium is so biochemically active that it has been likened to an octopus. A calcium ion can hold onto seven other molecules while it grabs onto one molecule of water. No other ion can do this. And it is the right size to easily get in and out of the human cell. As it does this, it takes a chain of nutrients into the cell and then leaves to get more nutrients.

The biggest problem scientists have found is that over time the human body becomes depleted of calcium. A compound called mono-ortho-calcium phosphate is the chemical buffer for the blood. This buffer maintains the alkaline level (or the lack of acidity) in your blood. Without it you would die. If the acidity level of your blood changes even slightly you die immediately. But in order to supply enough calcium for buffering we must have enough calcium being absorbed from our diet or our body will simply rob the needed calcium from our bones and teeth. The more acidic we become, the harder it is for oxygen to be present, so our biological terrain also becomes more anaerobic. Without adequate oxygenation, unfriendly bacteria, viruses, molds, and fungus can live and prosper. Then our cells cannot carry on their life-giving functions in a very efficient manner because our biological chemical reactions need oxygen.

Life and death are in the biological terrain and the battle cry here is to reclaim your biological terrain. This is so important that some practitioners working with the inner biological terrain and its implications to the health of our bodies are beginning to say "There are no specific diseases, only specific disease conditions, and there is only one disease. And that one disease is acidosis."

The human body is very intelligent. As we become more and more acidic the body starts to set up defense mechanisms to keep the damaging acid from entering our vital organs. It is known that acid gets stored in fat cells. After all, if the acid does come into contact with an organ the acid has a chance to eat holes in the tissue. This may cause the cells to mutate. The oxygen level drops in this acidic environment and calcium begins to be depleted. So as a defense mechanism, your body may actually make fat to protect you from your overly-acidic self. Those fat cells and cellulite deposits may actually be packing up the acid and trying to keep it a safe distance from your organs. The fat may be saving your vital organs from damage. Many people have found that a return to a healthy inner biological terrain helps them to lose excess fat.

Osteoporosis is very confusing for many people. Most people think they can eliminate it by increasing their consumption of milk and dairy products. But in the countries where the consumption of dairy products is very low the instances of osteoporosis is very rare. Osteoporosis is an acidosis problem. As the body becomes more acidic, to protect against the event of heart attack, stroke, illness, or even cancer, the body attempts to remain healthy. So, it steals calcium from the bones, teeth, and tissue. As bone mass becomes depleted, this is what we call osteoporosis. As we saturate the body with calcium this brings the alkaline pH up and drops the acid levels down.

One of the first warning signs of an acidic biological terrain is calcium deposits. A little known fact is that there has never been a scientifically proven association between calcium deposits in the body and nutritional calcium. In fact quite the opposite is found in the results of testing calcium deposits of the body. Calcium deposits come not from dietary calcium but from the structural calcium of our bones and teeth!

So if calcium deposits are forming, we know our inner biological terrain is too acidic. Our dietary intake of calcium is not keeping up with the calcium buffering needed and we are actively pulling calcium from our bones and teeth. It all works like a little train, from the bones to the fluids and cells, to the blood. As our biological terrain becomes acidic, our pH level drops. When this happens we start losing calcium out of the blood, the bones, and the tissues. This is a safety mechanism. Now your biological terrain's oxygen level drops leaving you tired and fatigued, allowing fungus, mold, parasites, bad bacteria, and viral infections to flourish and gain a hold throughout the body. It is interesting to note that you often won't have just some of these invaders. If you have Candida you will likely have bad bacteria, fungus, and parasites because they all flourish in the same terrain.

+ Is it too hot for you to ship

No! Order whenever you like, your wheatgrass juice will arrive in perfect shape!

Our shipping boxes feature 2 full inches of insulation. Between the insulation and the juice, we put an additional 0.6 inches of ice on all sides. The juice is placed inside this ice box. The ice is entirely sacrificial and must melt almost completely before the juice can be affected in any way.

We send these boxes on 2 days deliveries into Hawaii, California, Texas and Florida. Your juice will arrive in great shape.

+ Who is responsible if there is a problem (hint: we are)

Yes, we guarantee good delivery and the entire risk of shipping is ours. If you have any problem whatsoever, call us at 1-877-910-0467 and we will make it right.

+ What time will the juice arrive

Expect delivery by the end of the day you selected. When we ship, you will also receive an email that provides a tracking link so you can check it at anytime yourself.

+ Do I have to be home when the juice arrives

Your box will be shipped "No Signature Required" and does not require anyone to be home. Please note that the driver will not leave the box if he feels doing so risks the contents.

+ Sample size availability

Unfortunately, we do not have a smaller sample size available. Our wheatgrass juice is frozen and requires a certain mass of product to stay solidly frozen in transit.

Most will find that the need more than just a taste. After all, it actually tastes pretty good. The 100 fl. oz. package is actually a great sample as it will last long enough for you to make good observations and determine whether wheatgrass juice is positively affecting your health.

+ Shipping overseas

I'm sorry but we do not ship overseas. Our frozen juice packaging is optimized for North American delivery and would not arrive in a satisfactory condition. As this question comes up fairly frequently, here are our thoughts:

A way in which you can get our juice:
  • If you have a friend travelling to your country from North America, have us ship to them before they leave and ask them to bring you the juice
  • We have done this many successfully many times but you must check in advance to ensure will not have an import restriction

Packaging & Recycling

+ Plastics, BPA and chemical leaching

The quality of the packaging has been given careful consideration and it is one of several core differentiators that creates outstanding juice. We know of no better way to package the juice to keep it in perfect condition and promote the excellent health of our customers.

Packaging comes in a whole continuum of qualities ranging from cheap to very expensive. The low end of the packaging lines are dramatically inferior, very porous (air moves freely in and out of them), they come from the cheapest supplier and they often have surface contaminants. High end packaging is very expensive (it costs roughly 10 x more), is non-porous, contains known materials and is manufactured to rigid specifications. Our wheatgrass juice bags are very expensive and made of extremely high quality materials by a highly reputable manufacturer.

The wheatgrass juice bags are a high grade PET plastic with a nylon laminate on the outside and are manufactured in Denmark. They provide a 100% barrier protection against oxygen, do not contain bisphenol A and conform to much stricter European content standards including leach testing. The bags have been independently laboratory tested for 10 days periods with constant temperatures of 104 F and been shown not to leach. In addition, the juice bags are kept in our freezers which means no access to air, heat or light which are damaging factors to the juice and no heat or UV rays which break down plastics. You can review the testing documentation here:
Juice Bag Conformance Testing - July 12, 2006
Juice Bag Declaration Of Conformance - August 14, 2012

+ Recycling

The shipping boxes are Type 6 recyclable and are 100% reusable. The recycling challenge is that most municipalities have not yet implemented Type 6 recycling.

This means that we need to take charge and here is what can be done.

Programs which support blue box recycling are being added to many municipalities.

Some including the City of Toronto and Peel Region already support blue box recycling of our boxes.

If you do not live within these regions, please check your local municipality for type 6 recycling. When unsupported in the blue box program, a local drop off facility normally exists. A quick call to your city should help you locate the closest drop off facility.

Farming Techniques

+ Organic certification

We grow organically, are chemical free and are also big consumers of our own juice.  In terms of certification, we have not pursued organic certification for the following reasons:
  • As a small business, this is an avoidable recurring annual expense.
  • Certification is a marketing device used primarily in retail and we do very little retail business.  Our sales come from referrals, repeat customers and word-of-mouth.
  • Organic certification has almost no bearing on the quality of your food.  Organic hydroponic and hot house products do not represent the ideals you pursue.  In addition, many of the wheatgrass juice suppliers continue to produce high mold content juice despite their organic certifications.
We are alway trying to keep up with current marketing trends and believe that the current know your farmer movement (beyond organic) is a far more meaningful.  We produce the best wheatgrass juice we possibly can and invite you to know us.  Come to the farm or call us at 1-877-910-0467 and we'll answer all of your questions.

+ Seed source

Our seed is all self-sourced from our own fields.

This allows us to very tightly control the drying of the wheat berries. It is believed that the massive storage bins in use today are the source of the molds. They are so large that they prevent proper drying from taking place. You can hear a little more about these thoughts from Doug Kaufman at

In Canada, the wheat marketing board forbids the sale of seed direct to consumers. The law requires all seed (but not seed your use yourself) to pass through the board. For this reason, we neither use a supplier nor can we be the supplier.

I honestly don't know if that is the case in the U.S. but from a Canadian perspective this presents a pretty significant problem. All seed available from the wheat marketing board is treated with methyl-mercury which is a fungicide treatment (yuck!). This affects most seed available to Canadians (at least) and means that if your seed has a copper like color, be aware that is has been treated with methyl-mercury which most find very objectionable.

+ Juicer specifications

We work very hard to prevent the juice from being "denatured" or "degraded" in any way. The things to avoid are heat, exposure to air and elasped time.

We do manage all of these items in order to produce terrific juice. To avoid production heat, we use specialized slow speed juicers. These juicers are called "masticating" juicers and they simulate chewing the vegetable fibers to break up the plant cells. This results in more fiber, enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. Masitcating juicers are the most efficient method of expressing juice from the wheatgrass and provide the additional benefit of operating at slow speeds (RPMs) which results in less foam, less heat and more nutrition in your glass.

+ Quality testing procedures

For those that don't know what brix is, you can check out which says (among other things):

"Degrees Brix (symbol °Bx) is a measurement of the dissolved sugar-to-water mass ratio of a liquid"

You can also check out this chart of common brix readings:

Brix cannot be used with our wheatgrass juice (outdoor grown) as it always tests 0 on the brix scale.

In seeking a method of validating the quality of the juice, we purchased 2 refractometers several years ago. At the time, we were developing one of our juicers and wanted to see what technique proved to provide us with the highest density wheatgrass. To our surprise, the outdoor grown wheatgrass juice is not testable on the brix scale. This means there are absolutely no sugars of any type in the outdoor grown juice. Of course, that made us run around the house testing everything from soy sauce to fruit juices to milk. All of these showed readings at expected levels with extremely minor variances from one refractometer to the other; therefore, it was pretty quite clear that the equipment was in good operational order.

The statements made by a number of people (farmers / health enthusiasts not scientists) are that time allows the simple carbohydrates to convert into complex carbohydrates. As we fall squarely into the farmer/health enthusiast category that is the best explanation we have to offer. This leads us to believe that high brix readings are actually contraindicated as a measure of quality in the final product as it represents the level of immaturity rather than nutritional density. That said, it is likely that a high testing young plant (say 7 days old) would be better for you than a low testing plant at the same age.

As a refractometer cannot be used, we sought out the use of a spectrophotomer. A spectrophotomer allows you to measure light characteristics in specific frequency bands. We specifically use the light absorption to measure chlorophyll levels. In our experimentation we have found that as the grass matures, the sugars (which are present in the young plant) diminish as the chlorophyll rises.

Incidentally, when measuring chlorophyll with a spectrophotomer you find out something interesting. There are actually several types of chlorophyll includng chlorophyll A, B, C1, C2 and D. We do our testing on chlorophyll A as it is the only one directly involved in photosynthesis. It is interesting as things like algae and cyanobacteria which talk about high chlorophyll levels actually contain the C1, C2 and D varieties. That means that if chlorophyll is the active ingredient, you should expect different results with these products. You can read more here:

Areas Of Caution

+ Wheat gluten tolerance / celiac disease

Please make sure you read this entire message as the second and third paragraphs say different things.

I can recommend our wheatgrass juice to you without reservation. You will be pleased to hear that there is no gluten in our wheatgrass juice (click here for test results). The reason is that gluten is produced by an enzymatic process. Enzymatic processes are ones in which two or more ingredients come together to create an entirely different substance. As gluten is the product of an enzymatic process which combines proteins only present in the grain, wheat grass and wheatgrass juice do not contain gluten. When we harvest grass to make the juice, it is 7" - 11" high and in a completely green, grassy state. In our process, there are many weeks between planting and harvesting and no overlap between equipment that touches seed and equipment that cuts or juices the wheatgrass. We have many customers with gluten tolerance issues or celiac disease that have used and continue to use our wheatgrass juice with no problem.

That said, I did spend some time on and have some important information for you. Jamba Juice which has a gluten free menu does not list wheatgrass juice as being gluten free. This seems to be a handling issue as there is too much contact with the seeds that do contain gluten and some are so sensitive to gluten that just a brushing contact may set them off. I'm concerned that the close contact with the seeds may be a problem in indoor grown products where the grower is moving from planting (touching seeds) to juicing in the same daily cycle. There are reports of issues on

To summarize, I can only recommend our wheatgrass juice (DynamicGreens) because we control the process and can assure you that there is no cross contamination between seeds that contain gluten and juice. users have reported problems with other products and Jamba Juice in particular does not give gluten free assurances.

As always, keep in mind that we are health enthusiasts sharing experiences, not health professionals and you should consult your doctor.

+ Grass allergy

Sorry. If you are allergic to grass, wheatgrass juice is not for you.

+ Pregnant women and nursing mothers

DynamicGreens wheatgrass juice is a great addition to your diet before, during and after pregnancy. However, not all wheatgrass is created equal and there is something important you need to know.

You will find health professionals that will tell you not to take wheatgrass and they usually indicate that they are not concerned about the wheatgrass, they are concerned about adverse effects caused by mold.

Most wheatgrass juice that is available at juice bars, health food stores or specialty grocery stores comes from greenhouse growing operations. In these high density planting environments, soils and waters are often recycled and the growing process is shortened from months (about 120 days) to just 7 - 14 days. This wheatgrass is not the nutritional equivalent of outdoor grown wheatgrass and of much greater concern, it often contains high levels of mold.

Most of us are allergic to these molds and they can cause anything from mild (normally slight nausea) to severe reactions. Anything that you ingest that creates an allergic reaction is considered serious particularly when you have an extra passenger on board! Keep your distance from greenhouse wheatgrass. The easiest way to do this, is to take our wheatgrass juice because we will never engage in greenhouse growing operations.

+ Indoor grown wheatgrass and mold problems

Molds often contaminate wheatgrass when grown in indoor / greenhouse environments. These molds release mycotoxins which have a terrible taste and cause side-effects such as dizziness, nausea, headaches and purging.

+ Raw & living food pretenders

Having a living format is critical.

While powders, tablets and pasteurized green drinks often list the right ingredients, the wrong format means they only provide a fraction of the benefits.
