The Problem With Indoor Grown Wheatgrass

When you grow indoors, the environment is highly conducive to mold growth. This is a factor of the growing environment and unavoidable when you grow in trays. Here is what you need to know:

  • Mold issues with wheatgrass have soured many user experiences
  • Indoors even the most conscientious grower will have molds
  • Common observations associated with moldy wheatgrass
    • I know it’s good for you but it just tastes terrible.
    • I have to hold my nose when I drink it
    • I have been drinking the juice for months, but now when I raise a glass to my lips, I just can’t make myself drink it
    • I get so dizzy afterwards that I have to sit down
    • The wheatgrass juice gave me a terrible headache
    • I was so nauseated, I thought I was going to throw up
    • It made me throw up
  • It has become common practice to describe these reactions as the strong detoxifying effects of wheatgrass juice. Well informed people know better and attribute these reactions to the presence of poisons called mycotoxins which are produced by the mold.
  • Greenhouse growers concur that they have molds, they just say that they are non-pathogenic (read more here) and that ingestion won’t harm you. We strongly disagree that ingestion is insignificant because it stops people from being able to consume this incredible nutrition.   • Note that growers try to wash the molds off, use fungicides, use hydrogen peroxide or just try to cut above it. Unfortunately, none of these techniques is effective as it grows right into the grass and the juice will be tainted.

How To See Mold Using Your Camera

Molds are often very fine and as a result, you can’t see them. Here is a tip to allow you to see them using your digital camera or smartphone. Use your camera to take a picture of the lower portion of the plant and most importantly, force the flash on. The flash will light up the fine mold as shown in the example below:
